Purpose

To demonstrate knowledge of hazards associated with confined spaces

Overview

Confined spaces are enclosed or partially enclosed spaces that are not intended or designed primarily for human occupancy, where there is a risk of one or more of the following: oxygen concentration outside the safe oxygen range, a concentration of airborne contaminant that may cause impairment, loss of consciousness or asphyxiation, a concentration of flammable airborne contaminant that may cause injury from fire or explosion, or the engulfment in a stored free-flowing solid or a rising level of liquid that may cause suffocation or drowning.

If you are required to undertake work focusing on the management of health and safety risks in tight spaces, then this training is right for you.

Rest assured that you’ll be ready to enter any confined space without hesitation thanks to our training course designed exclusively for your needs by experienced professionals from all over New Zealand who understand confined spaces.

Who should attend?

Anyone who may be involved in confined space entries including a stand by person (or similar) should undergo the appropriate training.

Topics Covered

  • NZQA Unit Standard 18426 – Demonstrate knowledge of hazards associated with confined spaces [Level 3, Credits 4]

  • NZQA Unit Standard 17599 – Plan a confined space entry [Level 4, Credits 5]

  • NZQA Unit Standard 25510 – Operate an atmospheric testing device to determine a suitable atmosphere exists to work safely [Level 3, Credits 4]

After the course, participants are expected to demonstrate knowledge of confined spaces, and their permit notification and implementation requirements; identify control measures to eliminate, isolate, and minimise the risk of hazards in confined spaces; demonstrate knowledge of monitoring and confined space testing requirements, and describe the responsibilities and duties of people entering confined spaces or conducting observation duties for confined spaces.

Never enter a confined space without certified training. Get the necessary certificate with CC Training Academy’s NZQA accredited confined space course.

Course Content

This course lasts for a day and a half in which theories and technical skills are combined with practical applications. It teaches practical skills and information to effectively plan observation of confined spaces and safe passage. Successful completion of training is reportable by the training centre to the NZQA with the applicable unit standards.

Trainees will be able to establish planned and safe entry and conduct confined space rescues featuring various scenarios. They will learn how to develop an emergency procedure plan that follows the correct emergency procedures required for this type of work. Finally, they will be able to identify the required legal documents covering confined spaces as part of their course objectives.

This course can also be beneficial for people who are planning to engage in gas detection and want to learn how to perform gas tests for energy and chemical plant environments (NZQA Unit Standard 3058) as refresher training.
